Once a center for fur trading, today Spokane is the financial center of, and certainly the most cosmopolitan city in, eastern Washington. The name of the city was taken from a Native American word meaning "children of the sun," and Spokane is blessed with an average of 260 days of sunshine a year. The idyllic climate and location - the area is dotted with glistening lakes - make the city a mecca for outdoor recreation. Golf, mountain climbing, boating and fishing abound. Set an early tee time at any of the scenic and well-designed courses in the area, then walk, bike or canoe along the Centennial Trail. Serious cyclists should also check out South Hill, a pristine residential area that features about eight miles of challenging single and double track riding. Take a walk around Riverfront Park and then catch a performance of the Spokane Symphony, see a show at the Opera House or take in a play at the Civic Theater. The gegoor and outdoor possibilities are limitless.
